Hot rods and Hobnobs

Check out this pic of what turned up at work this morning. Now that’s proper, isn’t it? It’s 520bhp and does at standing quater at 155mph. More tea, vicar?

Ta very much for all the support at Scarborough. It was a mega turn-out and I did royally on the tea bags and biscuit front. See the pic of our tea cupoard at work. I reckon that’ll do us till Christmas. Hope that anyone that got one of my stickers puts em to good use. As you can see mine is in pride of place. I’ve even got one on the John Deere.

So, not much too write about really. I’ll let you know how next year’s job situation looks. Not the proper job, that’s all sorted. I mean motorbike racing. Irons are in the fire but perfect preparation prevents piss poor performance. I reckon that was Mick Doohan’s saying, and that man didn’t muck about.

Meet Guy – loads more times

It’s worth double-checking the times with the shop the day before the events (or check back on the blog), because some of these times may alter…

Meet Guy in Leeds this Saturday

Hein-GerickeSorry for the short notice, but Guy will be at the Hein Gericke store in Leeds from 2-5 this Saturday afternoon. Here’s the official blurb. It says all day, but Guy’s pretty sure it’s just the afternoon…

‘Road racing superstar and all-round top lad, Guy Martin, will be making a special appearance at Hein Gericke Leeds on Saturday 26 September.

The Hydrex Honda rider will be on hand all day to mug it up for your camera and sign autographs. Guy is sponsored by bike-mad clothing brand Red Torpedo, and there’ll be special offers on their range of funky threads, as well on other items throughout the store. Freebie and prizes are up for grabs in a free prize draw, and Leeds Tyres will be there to answer all your ‘black ‘oop’ related questions, while shop partner Paul will be cooking up his famous five alarm chilli and other attractions are to be announced.’

Scarborough Gold Cup press release

_MG_4104Guy Martin overcame a tough weekend at Oliver’s Mount, Scarborough to win the International Gold Cup Trophy for the seventh consecutive year. Riding Tommy Hill’s spare British Superbike machine at the 2.43-mile public road circuit, the Hydrex Honda ace suffered a spill on Saturday and endured a number of technical gremlins but it all came right in the feature race and he was able to lead from start to finish to take another popular win.

The weekend got off to the perfect start when Guy won his Superbike heat race on Saturday but in the main 8-lap race a poor start saw him drop back to fifth at the end of the first lap. He soon moved up to third but try as he might there was nothing he could do about the pace of Ryan Farquhar and Ian Hutchinson. Then, on the last lap, a problem with the brakes saw him crash in to the back of Hutchinson at Mountside Hairpin and he went down whilst Hutchinson lost his second place although he did get going again for fifth.

With the machine damaged, Sunday saw the bike suffer a misfire in the morning warm-up and team boss Shaun Muir had to drive to the circuit with some new parts. The bike couldn’t be repaired in time for the second Superbike race but he was able to take to the line for the feature Gold Cup race. The initial race was red flagged but when it got going again, Guy made no mistakes at the start and led the pack round on the opening lap. There was little to choose between the top four riders but in the second half of the race it became a straight fight between Guy and Hutchinson. The Padgetts Honda rider put Guy under extreme pressure but he responded with the fastest lap of the race, and a new outright lap record of 83.286mph, to take yet another win.

The two 600cc races were equally hectic and after coming third in his heat, Guy had to settle for fifth on the grid and a second row start. That meant it would be tough to overtake the four riders in front of him around the narrow woodland circuit but he was able to claim a brace of thirds in the two races.

Speaking later, a pleased Guy said: “That was a tough weekend and I’m both delighted and relieved to have come away with the Gold Cup again as there was certainly a time when I didn’t think it would be possible. The bike was completely new to me and with all the electronics on the bike it was hard to get the bike to work in the right way for me. We kept chipping away but the poor start in Saturday’s race meant it was a real struggle and third was all I could do before making a mistake on the final lap and taking out Hutchy in the process – it was completely my fault. We thought the bike was ok but when we started it up on Sunday morning, it was misfiring considerably.”

“The cam sensor had broke and with no spare Shaun had to come down to the circuit and we couldn’t get it fixed in time for the Superbike race so I was gutted to miss out on that. We got the bike fired up just in time for the Gold Cup but I was a bit apprehensive as I was going in to the race blind and the last thing I wanted was the bike to cut out somewhere but, fortunately, she never missed a beat. It was an incredibly tough race, probably my toughest ever Gold Cup, as Hutchy was on my back wheel the whole way and that could be seen in both of us breaking the outright lap record. I was able to keep him at arms length though and to win again was brilliant. It’s a great way to end the year and a big thanks to all my team – Danny, Cammy and Johnny – and to Shaun for all his support this season.”

Team boss Shaun Muir added: “It’s been a really busy week for the Hydrex team with two of our local events, Croft and Scarborough, coming within a week of each other whilst we’ve also had two new arrivals to contend with so it’s extremely pleasing to end with Guy winning the Gold Cup again. He had a few niggling problems with the bike, which weren’t his fault at all, whilst he also had to contend with some extremely tough competition but he got his just rewards for a lot of hard work and effort.”

“The roads campaign has been a bit frustrating for Guy as that TT win again eluded him, and the team, but he also notched up a lot of success with wins at the Ulster GP, Southern 100 and now here so I’m pleased that his season has ended on a high. He’s been 100% professional throughout and I’d like to say thanks to him and all his team for everything they’ve done in 2009. Regarding our plans for 2010, SMR and Hydrex will sit down over the next few days to determine which way we’ll go for both the circuits and the roads and we hope to have a few decisions made in the next 7-10 days.”

Guy’s domestic season has now come to an end but he hopes to contest the now annual ‘Kings of Wanneroo’ challenge races in Australia in November.

Isle of Man End-to-End

I’m we’ll impressed with the comments on the last post. Hopefully I’ll have fire-breathing as well as tight rope walking sussed in the by the end of the week, I’ll keep you informed. It’ll be an education I’m sure. Oh, I’m more impressd that someone knew that I was holding an exhaust manifold of a Rolls Royce Merlin. Someone out there is as sad as me and me dad, well impressed.

Right, last weekend saw me, Adam and Dan go over to the Isle of Man End-to-End moutain bike race. It was proper hard, made a six-lap TT look like a nice day out. It was a bit of a rush job. I worked Saturday morn, went over Sat night, had a few shandys, raced Sunday, got home at 2am Monday then back to work 6. But it was worth it. Good laugh had by all, oh and ta very much to Nige and Marian for putting the three of us up, much apprecaited. So I’m well ready for a bit of racing this weekend. All I’ve been doing since my last race is drive tractors, mend trucks, ride push bikes and the odd bit of sleep, so I’m well ready for it. I’m not sure what bike ill be riding, mine has been sold, so ill take me push bike just in case. Oh one of these pics is a limited print that Duke are doing, what do you reckon?

Tightrope walking and stickers

Tool Box and Shit

Not much to mention, but harvest is getting there and the truck job is same as usual, all go, no go. The Manx GP was an education. The organisation was spot on, it was let down a bit by the shit weather. Yon man upstairs hasn’t been playing the white man, that’s a local saying but you get the jist? So ta very much to Phil Taubman the clerk of the course and to John Sims for putting loads of effort in. I’m just guttted about not winning. Oh well, I’ll give it a whirl next year and just hope the weather’s a bit kinder.

Right back to more pressing matters. I was up in the grain store the other day walking on top of an RSJ section. It was a fair way up and it just got me thinking that I wouldn’t mind giving tight rope walking a whirl. I got a right buzz of walking on an RSJ section, so a tight rope I reckon would deffinetely flick me switch. Where would i go to get started, or do i build my own? It can’t be that hard, can it?

Oh, and Paddy the helmet painter and brickie has got me a load of skull and spanners stickers to give away at Scarborough. They are a mega job, but they weren’t cheap, so that got me thinking that i can’tt just give em away, people are going to have to earn em, but by doing what? I don’t know… tight rope lessons? Swap for tea bags, Lancaster bomber spare parts? I really dont know. What I do know is they look cool as. I even put some in the back of me new car, She looks a treat. we aren’t here for a long time we’re here for a good time, and all that.
