TT 2009 plans

Now then folks, I reckon I’ve more or less got my TT team lined up. There has been a lot of time gone into this, because this is what’s going to be the key to sucess at the TT next year. I’ll let you know who Ive got sorted out, to help on the spannering and preparation, in a week or two, but it’s nearly sorted.

So, my 09 team mate is going to Karl Harris. This is going to be an education. That lad’s a bit of a expert when it comes to the red wine, so i reckon he’ll be getting me trained on wine front next year, and he’s going to start coming out on his push bike with us out our way. A good trade off, I reckon!

Off to the NEC bike show again Next saturday for the TT day. It’ll be a busy un. I need to get the TT organisers primed up about one of them watches. While there I’ll get another good look at the Carole Nash and custom bikes stand. I’m well into bikes with a where a bit of imagination has gone into them. There wasn’t owt really on the Japanese stands that really got me going. Am I getting old?

Oh, and Wayne asked about 2009 colours, they won’t be exactly the same but a paintjob for the bikes won’t be definite for a long time yet. I’ll post colours as soon as I can.

Huge news

Martin confirmed at Hydrex Honda for 2009
After weeks of speculation, Guy Martin has confirmed that he will be remaining with the Hydrex Honda team for the forthcoming 2009 season. The 27-year old had talked openly about a possible move to Rob McElnea Racing and Yamaha but has opted to stay with Shaun Muir’s squad instead for a third successive season with both parties focusing firmly on the Isle of Man TT Races.

Muir was keen to retain Martin and, with additional support from Honda Racing, the duo have agreed terms that will see Guy have a different race schedule to that of 2008. The Kirmington ace will step back from the British Superbike Championship and instead contest a race schedule that he feels will be more beneficial to his aspirations at the International road races, namely the TT. Never at ease in the highly corporate world of BSB, Guy will contest a couple of early season British Supersport meetings before taking in the North West 200 and Isle of Man TT Races. After the TT, where he hopes to clinch that elusive win, he will revert back to his old stamping ground with selected outings in the Irish National road races prior to the Ulster Grand Prix.

In addition, Guy has pencilled in the Cock o’ the North and Gold Cup meetings at Oliver’s Mount, Scarborough along with the Southern 100 and Macau Grand Prix, where he will be aiming to put the disappointment of the last two seasons behind him. The new deal will again see Guy have a full compliment of Superbike, Supersport and Superstock machinery whilst he will also his own personal team of mechanics to support him at the road races.

Speaking about the decision to stay with Hydrex, Guy commented:

“I said all along that I didn’t want to leave Shaun as he’s far and away the best person I’ve ever worked with and I have so much respect for him but I just felt that certain factors needed to change. I was possibly a bit hasty when I said I was going to leave the team but Shaun never wanted me to go and he’s done everything to give me the set-up I wanted. I told him exactly what I wanted for 2009 and he has given me just that so there can be no excuses now!”

“I’ve got the bikes, mechanics and race schedule that will suit me down to the ground and whilst it’s a shame to leave BSB, I don’t think it’s the be all and end all that everyone thinks it is and I firmly believe that the meetings I’ll take in during 2009 will be more beneficial for me. Everything is geared towards the TT and the planning starts now so that’s why I’ve decided to plan the year accordingly and pick the meetings that I want to do and ones that will keep the smile on my face. As well as the International road races, I’m looking at contesting two Scarborough meetings and selected Irish National road races, namely Skerries, Kells and Mid Antrim whilst the Southern 100 was at the top of the ‘to do’ list. This is exactly the deal I was looking for and Shaun has given me everything so now it’s time to deliver the goods and nail that first TT win.”

Guy will take in some pre-season testing in Guadix and Almeria in late February prior to the 2009 season getting underway in April.

WWII watches and half-mast trousers

The NEC show wasn’t nearly as bad as I was expecting. There were loads of half-naked birds and loads of trick bikes. But the most impressive thing was one of the new TT sponsors, Graham watches. These are on offer to the winner of each of the TT races, and are the trickest watches I’ve ever seen. They where originally designed for fighter pilots in the second world war, I’ve put a pic up, but you need to see one in the flesh to apreciate it. Oh, and they cost £4600.

I ended up at the MCN awards do. I was meant to be dressed in a fancy dinner jacket suit, but could only manage to dig out a dickie bow, half-mast trousers and some trainers. I looked like I’d been dragged through a hedge backwards, but it was still a good night. Going shopping for a suit is on the job to do list!

And Red Torpedo have worked with Hydrex Honda to have a big stand selling gear, including my branded stuff.

Back from Macau

Well, I’ve just got home after a not to successful Macau GP. You could nearly say it was non-event as far as results go, but I’m still here, still walking and still breathing so it could all be worse. I reckon I could nearly say this was the final nail in the 2008 road racing coffin. There isn’t a lot I can salvage from this season, other than a win or two at the Southern 100 and the Scarborough Gold Cup. Oh, and maybe the glitz of the Goodwood Festival of Speed.
I’ll not bore you as there was plenty of mad stuff going off in Macau to keep me entertained, along the lines of dodgy back street massages in Hong Kong or maybe that was something to do with me having a bang to the head? I was out for a good half-hour and came around when they were feeding me into the MRI scanner machine. Not a good thought to take me into the winter.
I’m back to work now putting the finishing touches to my new push bike in my tea breaks. She’s a Cotic Soul hardtail and I’ve pimped her up to death with every last little trick bit. I’ll get some pics up soon.
I best get cracking.
Oh I’ve got one of my Arai helmets up for grabs. I’ll get a question sorted by the end of the week.

Guy in Macau

Guy crashed his Blade in the very first session of Macau, he’s out of the race but ok. He lost the front end on the lethally dirty and dusty track despite taking it steady. It was a small error punished in a big way. Guy hit the barrier at Moorish bend and was knocked out. The bike was easily repaired but because he suffered a concussion he is unable to race.
More news when he returns home.

Macau news from Bike Animal Honda

After a season he’d probably rather forget, Bike Animal Honda rider Guy Martin is once again venturing to the Far East in a final bid to lay to rest the ghosts of the past twelve months.

At last year’s Macau Grand Prix, the now 27-year-old Kirmington rider was one of the favourites for victory when a practice smash saw him ruled out of the event due to a broken wrist meaning he has unfinished business on the 3.8 mile Guia street circuit.

Coupled with the disappointments of retiring when well in command of both the North West 200 Superbike race and Isle of Man Superbike TT during the summer, it means that Martin is aiming at nothing less than a win when the race gets underway on Saturday 15th November.

“A win and now’t else will do!” exclaimed Martin in his blunt Lincolnshire tones. “We’ve not had too much success this year and after what happened there last year, I think I’m due some decent luck. We know we’ve got the pace and I’m desperate to round off the season in style so I know what I’ve got to do and you’d better believe it!”

For team owner Shaun Muir, he too is looking to round off the season in style: “I’ve felt so sorry for Guy this season what with the problems he has had to endure, which were not of his making so if anyone deserves to win, it must be him. The team also have done a great job and some success in Macau would go some way to making up for their disappointments also.”

The SMR bike of Martin will be sporting a brand new colour scheme for sponsors Bike Animal as Muir explained: “Robert Williams of Bike Animal has been a fantastic sponsor this year who has given us great support so it’s very appropriate for Guy to ride specifically in his colours at this race. We’d love to give him and his staff an early Christmas present and what better than rewarding him with a victory to add to Guy’s Southern 100 and Scarborough Gold Cup successes.”

Practice gets underway at 07.30 (local time – Macau is UCT/GMT + 8 hours) on Thursday 13th November with first qualifying at 15.25 the same day. Second qualifying takes place on Friday 14th November at 07.30 with warm up on Saturday 15th November at 07.30 followed by the 15-lap race at 15.15.

Up to date practice times will be posted after each session on www.bikeanimal.com and further information is available at www.macau.grandprix.gov.mo
