Flanders, Thruxton and the NW200

Picture 1 of 2

Morning campers, I said I was going to write something about Thruxton didn’t I? But firstly, thanks to Aiden here are some pics from the Tour of Flanders. Don’t worry, I haven’t sold out and worn Lycra yet, can’t see it myself. That’s event is pain for you though. A mega ride that was.

My dad is a bit more up with computers than me, and said he thought this was funny. My computer isn’t fast enough to play it, but I’m sure I offend someone.

Right, Thruxton, had a educational weekend. Good to get out on a motorbike again. You sometimes forget what the motorbiking thing is all about after a long winter, but you’re soon back into it after a few laps. I learnt that the bikes aren’t far off . They need fine tuning, but they are not a mile away, throttle on the right, clutch on the left. Still not got a go on the superbike yet, waiting for her to get screwed together, so as a bit of a last minute decision, we are now going to ride superstock and superbike at this weekend’s Oulton Park meeting, just to try and get some miles in before the fast approaching NW200. It’ll all come out in the wash I’m sure. Just can’t wait to get back racing on the roads again. As for the new calendar, I reckon it’s just about cock on, just a bit undecided about the Skerries or Goodwood, that will all depend on how the TT goes, and whether that means I get a summer holiday at the Megavalanch or not. It was borderline as to whether I deserved it last year, so I’m going to have to pull my finger out this year, aren’t I?

Oh nearly forgot, how could i forget? Last minute decision again on Sat afternoon after work to go to the REEF gig, at Manchester academy. I know, but what a mega gig. I mean mega. They where only doing five gigs, and this was the last one, so I dragged the farmer’s daughter and Adrian along, and what a night. I smelt of a pig farm after a long stint in the mosh pit, but a small price to pay for a mega gig. They are doing some festivals this summer if you get chance to see em, you’ll not be disappointed.

Martin on form at Thruxton

Guy Martin got his 2010 racing season underway at Thruxton on Sunday where he competed in both the British Supersport and Superstock Championship races on his Wilson Craig Honda’s. Using the meeting primarily for set up time with the two bikes, Guy nevertheless put in some spirited perfromances and although he slid off in the Superstock race, he bounced back to take 12th and 4 Championship points in the Supersport encounter.

The Kirmington rider was in fine form throughout practice and qualifying around the 2.35-mile circuit and it was the Superstock class where he shone the most, a brilliant lap of 1m18.039s placing him third in the second qualifying session, moving him up to fifth overall for a second row start. In the Supersport class it was slightly tougher but he reduced his lap time by over half a second between the first and second qualifying sessions to move up to 21st overall.

Race day at the Hampshire circuit was blessed with warm sunshine and it was the 15-lap Superstock race that was first up for Guy with high hopes on recording a strong result. For once though, he didn’t make his strong getaway off the line and he found himself down in 10th place at the end of the opening lap but he didn’t get much opportunity to progress further as two laps later the front end tucked at the Campbell-Cobb complex and down he went, fortunately without injury. He bounced back though in the 18-lap Supersport race and despite his 21st place starting position, he was soon into the points climbing as high as 14th as early as the second lap. Despite circulating on his own for much of the race, Guy put in a series of consistent laps and he was rewarded with 12th place at the chequered flag.

Speaking later, Guy said: “It was all about getting time on the bikes this weekend and I wasn’t too fussed about the results, I just wanted to make some headway with the set-up of the bikes. I haven’t ridden for a long time so it was good to blow the cobwebs away and we’ve definitely learnt a lot in the three days we’ve been here. The Superstock bike is pretty much in the ballpark already but we’ve got a number of things to adjust and try with the Supersport machine so that’s what we’ll be looking to do at the next couple of meetings in order to be fully prepared for the North West 200.”

Guy’s next meeting will be at the Cookstown 100 this Saturday, April 25, the first race in the 2010 Irish Road Racing Championship.

Sunday 18th April – Update

Picture 1 of 3

Now then, a fair bit’s been going on since my last post. The Tour of Flanders bicycle race was proper tough. That is a man’s sport I’ll tell you. I even got the hang of peeing myself while riding. That’s commitment for you, eh? Then we went to the first round of the Chain Reaction Cycle’s marathon night and day race, and that proper hard as well. I’m starting to enjoy a bit of pain now. This is all in preparation for a race in Austria at the end of July. It’s meant to be the toughest in Europe so, perfect preperation prevents piss poor performance.

Right, on the motorised two wheel front, it’s all going to plan, what do you reckon to the new colours? Proper retro. I reckon I’d have fitted in a bit better in the 60s with boys such as Bill Ivy and Mike Hailwood, but that’s not going to happen is it? So I thought trying to look like em might help. Less is more I’d say. Doing thruxton this weekend so I’ll let you know how it all goes, itching to get a ride out, I’m getting tired of pedals.
